City of London

The City of London

Known as the Square Mile is the world’s leading business and financial centre. It is the historic core of London around which the modern conurbation of Greater London grew. The City’s boundaries have remained almost unchanged since the Middle Ages.

The City of London Corporation

The City of London Corporation provides local government and policing services for the financial and commercial heart of Britain, the ‘Square Mile’. The City of London combines its ancient traditions and ceremonial functions with the role of a modern and efficient local authority, looking after the needs of its residents, businesses and over 320,000 people who come to work in the ‘Square Mile’ every day. It supports the SYF by hosting our regular committee meetings and AGM.

The City of London Corporation supports and promotes the City as the world leader in international finance and business services. This is the fundamental principle that guides everything the City Corporation does including the provision of high quality local government services for the Square Mile, services for the whole of London and supporting the economic regeneration of neighbouring boroughs. The Lord Mayor's Show

Lord Mayor’s ShowEach year the SYF take part in the Lord Mayor’s Show, the world’s oldest civic procession. The Lord Mayor’s procession of three miles winds through nearly 800 years of London’s history, marching unscathed through everything from the Black Death to the blitz. It travels from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice, where the Lord Mayor takes an oath of allegiance to the sovereign before the Lord Chief Justice and the judges of the Queen’s Bench Division.

The Lord Mayor’s role is defined here and is not to be confused with role of the Mayor of London.
