Tour of Goldsmith's Hall

Date:  9 Jan 2012
Time:  18:00
Location:  Goldsmith's Hall, Foster Lane, London
Cost: £0.00

“The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of the Great Twelve and one of the most prestigious companies within the City, opens the doors of the magnificent Goldsmiths’ Hall to the Society of Young Freeman. Since 1339 the Goldsmiths’ Company has had a Hall on the very same site and the current incarnation is one to behold. Designed by Philip Hardwick in the 1820’s, the hugely extravagant Hall comprises of five main rooms with a Grand staircase leading you there from a glorious main entrance. Founded to regulate the craft or trade of the goldsmith, the Goldsmiths’ Company has been responsible since 1300 for testing the quality of gold, silver, platinum and palladium. To this very day Hallmarking has been taking place on this site, making the Goldsmiths’ Company one of the only Liveries to still apply their trade within its walls.

The Clerk, Dick Melly, will welcome us with drinks in one of the Luncheon rooms before being taken around the main public rooms which include the splendid Livery Hall, by the Librarian, David Beasley . We will learn the history and the inner workings of one of the most affluent Livery Companies in the City, before we head back to the Luncheon room to finish our drinks.

This is a first for the SYF and an event not to be missed so book early. More information on the hall can be found at http://thegoldsmiths.co.uk/goldsmiths’-hall . We look forward to seeing you all then.
