Tour of the Chamberlain's Office and talk about the Freedom of the City of London

Date:  8 Mar 2012
Time:  18:00
Location:  Chamberlain's Court, Guildhall, Aldermanbury, EC2V, London
Cost: £10.00

One of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies still in existence today is granting of the Freedom of the City of London. It is believed that the first Freedom was presented in 1237.

The medieval term “Freeman” meant someone who was not the property of a feudal Lord, but enjoyed the privileges such as the right to earn money and own land. Town dwellers who were protected by the charter of their town or city were often free – hence the term ‘Freedom of the City’.

Murray Craig from the Chamberlain’s office, who more than likely presented you with your Freedom, will be giving us a talk and a tour of the Court of the Chamberlain and explain in detail about the Freedom of the City of London that each and every one of us has received.

This is a great opportunity to have a better understanding of this great privilege that has been bestowed upon us and will give us a better learning to try and encourage others to gain this the wonderful tradition that has lasted for centuries.

After the tour and as per custom with the SYF we will head to a local hostelry and Murray Craig will be joining us.

PLEASE NOTE: bookings can only be secured by advance payment through PayPal. If you choose not proceed with payment at the time of booking your reservation will be cancelled.
